Resto-Style Beef Pares Recipe
Nothing pulls you out of a slump like a big, warm bowl of beef pares. This humble stew is the savior of late-night partygoers, cash-strapped office workers, and anyone needing a dose of comfort. Since it’s a staple of local karinderyas and Filipino restaurants, you might think learning how to cook beef pares at home isn’t worth the effort.
But wait until you see how easy it is to perfect a classic beef pares recipe, like the one below. It calls for Knorr Beef Cubes, spices, and flavorful sauces to make an inexpensive cut of meat taste premium. This comes together in just over an hour – most of which is for simmering the beef until fork-tender. So worth it!

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp cooking oil
- 1 pc medium onion, sliced
- 6 cloves garlic, chopped
- 1 kg beef camto (flank steak), cubed
- 1 pc Knorr Beef Cube
- 2 pcs star anise
- 2 tbsp chili garlic sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
- 1/3 cup soy sauce
- 2 cups water
- 2 stalks onion leeks, sliced
- 2 tbsp cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tbsp water
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- garlic rice, to serve
The chili garlic sauce in this beef pares gives it some heat – have extra on the side if you want even spicier spoonfuls. This recipe suggests eating it with garlic rice, but it's equally good with mami and other noodles. Try udon for a thick and chewy option or springy rice noodles: both are great for absorbing sauces! You can even turn this into a soup by adding more liquid. Double the beef cubes and adjust the other seasonings to get the flavor just right.
