Ever want to recreate a Japanese recipe at home only to find out you have none of the Japanese ingredients the recipe calls for? You won’t have that problem with this easy-to-follow gyudon recipe. We skipped out on all the special ingredients and we teach you how to make delicious beef gyudon at home using only pantry staples. Now you can have gyudon whenever a craving strikes, even at midnight!

Ingredients
  • 1 pc large white onion, sliced thinly
  • 500 g thinly sliced beef (chuck or ribeye)

Gyudon Sauce:

  • 1 tbsp + 2 tsp sugar
  • 1 pc Knorr Beef Cube dissolved in 1 cup water
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1 tbsp Knorr Liquid Seasoning
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce

For Serving:

  • 5 cups Japanese rice or Korean rice
Cooking Method
  1. In a pan over low heat, add oil and sliced onions. Cook for 5-6 minutes, making sure to stir often.

  2. Add the beef and all the gyudon sauce ingredients into the pan.

  3. Bring up the heat to medium and cover the pan. Let the beef brown, making sure to skim off the scum that comes up to the surface.

  4. Bring the heat down to a simmer and continue cooking for 4-5 minutes, covered.

  5. Once done, divide the cooked rice into 4 bowls. Drizzle some of the sauce on top.

  6. Put the beef and onions on top of the rice along with the remaining sauce.

  7. Serve warm and enjoy this fuss-free beef gyudon!

Using ingredient substitutes is a great way to make your Japanese favorites without needing to buy specialty ingredients that you probably won’t use as much.
