Beef stroganoff recipes have come a long way from their roots in traditional Russian cuisine. Legend has it that a French chef developed the original recipe for the aristocratic Stroganov family, hence its name. Eventually, the dish took off and became globally well-loved comfort.

The version you know today may be closer to the American style. Chefs in the U.S. tweaked the dish to include creamy mushroom gravy, among other flavor enhancers. Strangely, there was a time when adding mushrooms to the beef stroganoff wasn’t the gold standard!

Though beef stroganoff originated in high society, it is simple, hearty, and enjoyable for any occasion. The dish is easy enough for weeknight family dinners yet impressive enough to bring to holiday potlucks. Make this with your kids and teach them about cuisines from far-off places!

How to Cook Beef Stroganoff

Traditional beef stroganoff recipes call for just a handful of ingredients – tender beef, mustard, and sour cream. This recipe is unconventional, but it marries classic components with some budget-friendly swaps, such as margarine instead of butter and mayonnaise to recreate sour cream's richness and slight acidity. You can add other spices to your liking, including a Knorr broth cube to deepen its beefy flavor.

Ingredients

• 2 tbsp margarine
• 1 pc onion, chopped
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 cup sliced button mushrooms
• 500 g beef sirloin, sliced into ½-inch-long strips
• 1½ cups cream
• 1 pc Knorr Beef Cube
• 3 tbsp Lady's Choice Real Mayonnaise

Method

1. Heat margarine in a pan over medium heat. Sauté onions, garlic, and mushrooms until fragrant. Set aside.
2. In the same pan over high heat, sear beef until browned. Add cream, Knorr Beef Cube, and the onion mixture. Lower heat and simmer until the beef cooks.
3. Stir in Lady's Choice Real Mayonnaise. Season to taste. Serve immediately.

5 Perfect Partners for Beef Stroganoff

Rice

Filipinos enjoy beef stroganoff as a hearty ulam over rice, much like the fast-food fave burger steak. The pairing is a no-brainer, especially since the sauce is creamy, peppery, and full of umami from the mushrooms.

Noodles

Equally revered is beef stroganoff pasta or variations of it. Try scooping some of that sauce over buttered egg noodles! You can also experiment with other options as long as that luscious sauce can cling to them. Japanese udon and Italian farfalle will also work well.

Bread

Bread is another easy partner. Go for something thick and crusty, like sourdough or sliced baguette, so you can spoon the beef on top. It’ll be like an open-faced sandwich. Alternatively, use soft butter rolls or pandesal to mop up the sauce.

Potatoes

Beef and potatoes in any form will always be a winning pairing. Dial up the stroganoff’s creaminess with fluffy mashed potatoes. The sauce will double as gravy! You can also enjoy it with baked or roasted potatoes for a heartier bite.

Roasted vegetables

If you want to make your meal more nutritious, have your beef with a side of vegetables. Broccoli, sweet potatoes, corn, and carrots are extra tasty after roasting in the oven. Fresh produce can get pricey, so you can opt for frozen goods. No one will be able to tell the difference!

Try this beef stroganoff recipe with these sides and more! It’s the kind of dish you and your family can enjoy for endless meals. Keep it interesting by tweaking your version from time to time. Make it with different mushrooms and beef cuts. Add vegetables to bulk it up. Top each serving with a dollop of sour cream, just like the Stroganovs did. See what works for you, then have everyone try your version at the next dinner party!
