The Philippines is famous for having the lengthiest holiday season. On the first day of September, expect to hear Christmas carols everywhere, from malls and supermarkets to bus stations and neighborhood bakeries.

Soon after, carolers start making their rounds. Groups go from one house to another, collecting gifts and prizes while serenading families with their angelic voices. If you can't decide what dishes to include in your party lineup, tune in! You’ll be surprised to hear mentions of food in many of these carols. Here are six Christmas songs about food to guide your menu planning.

“Frosty the Snow Man”

“Frosty the Snowman” is one of the most popular Christmas songs. It tells the tale of a snowman coming to life to play with children. Aside from his top hat, Frosty is rarely seen without his corn cob pipe. Inject a little bit of Frosty to upcoming feasts with a corny dish. Why not try the Mexican elote? You can make it with Lady’s Choice Real Mayonnaise, Parmesan cheese, chili powder, and chopped cilantro. This one’s best paired with a sweet, savory, tangy, or spicy main, like barbecue ribs, chicken wings, or grilled steak.

“A Perfect Christmas”

What is your idea of a perfect Christmas? For crooner Jose Mari Chan, it’s “to spend it with you, in a party or dinner for two.” Want to follow suit and prepare a special meal for your partner? Unlike planning huge feasts, cooking a four-course meal for two can be a breeze.

Begin by serving a creamy soup made of squash or mushrooms. Next, offer a classic macaroni salad while playing Mr. Chan’s new “Mac Reunion Na” in the background. For mains, whip up a Parmesan-crusted salmon. End the meal with a creamy mango float – “simple pleasures are made special, too, when they're shared with you.”

“The Christmas Song”

Who doesn’t recognize this song’s opening line? “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire.” But are you one of those who can’t remember its title? Maybe if you prepare a dish in honor of this classic carol, you won’t forget “The Christmas Song” anymore.

So, for this year, why not make a chestnut-stuffed chicken galantina? It can be the star of your handaan! The common practice is to add peeled castañas to roast turkey, but you can do the same with your chicken relleno recipe. Chop the chestnuts coarsely, then mix them with your other filling ingredients. Try them alongside olives and raisins!

“Sleigh Ride”

Recreating a snowy sleigh ride is impossible indoors. But enjoying a cup of coffee while “snuggled up together like two birds of a feather” isn’t. Instead of your usual nightcap brew, make your treat extra jolly by turning it into an affogato. You only need two ingredients for this beverage-slash-dessert. And it only takes seconds to assemble!

Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass – make it as round as a snowball. Next, pour in a shot of espresso. Finish with chocolate shavings or syrup, if desired. Serve after a hearty round of Christmas carols or a Noche Buena feast. “Giddy yap, giddy yap, giddy yap, it's grand!”

“Let It Snow”

Are you going out caroling with family and friends? Don’t forget to pack a merry snack. For a quick option, draw inspiration from a treat mentioned in “Let It Snow.” Somewhere in the lyrics, you’ll find “It doesn't show signs of stopping, and I brought some corn for popping.” Popcorn!

Put together a trail mix by air-popping corn in the microwave. Let the popcorn cool before tossing in nuts, chocolate pieces, pretzels, and dried fruit. Pack the sweet and savory treats in sandwich bags and distribute them to your group.

“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas”

“It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” welcomes this festive season like no other. Plus, it mentions “candy canes and silver lanes that glow.” There’s your hint for dessert! Besides using these cane-shaped peppermint sticks as tree ornaments, you can add them to your holiday beverages and sweets. Stick a piece into a cupcake, crush some for sprinkling over tiramisu, or use them as stirrers for hot cocoa. “Sure, it's Christmas once more!”

The holidays won't be complete without decorations, parties, and food. Make sure your family is ready with a song list and a menu inspired by Christmas carols. And start practicing and stretching your vocal cords. It’s the most wonderful time of the year!
