How to Make a Ham and Cheese Sandwich

A basic recipe for this sandwich features ham (protein), cheese (calcium), and bread (carbohydrates). But behind its simple appearance is a recipe you can elevate effortlessly. And for parents of picky eaters, the option to quickly tweak this treat makes this a godsend. Here’s what you need to make this hot ‘wich.

Ingredients:

• 6 bread slices
• 2 tbsp butter, softened
• ¼ cup Lady’s Choice Ham Spread
• 3-6 ham slices
• 3-6 cheese slices

Method:

1. Slather butter on one side of the bread slices.
2. Heat a pan over medium flame and toast bread slices slightly. Set aside.
3. Evenly smear Lady’s Choice Ham Spread on the buttered side of the bread. Layer 1-2 ham and cheese slices on top.
4. Cover with the remaining bread slices. Toast again until the cheese is melted.

Top tips for making grilled ham and cheese sandwiches

The perfect grilled sandwich has that distinct crunchy crust and gooey cheese center. Achieve the ultimate baon with these helpful tips:

1. Sourdough, wheat, or rye may be healthier options, but they don’t produce that crust as well as white bread. Go for the Japanese milk variety or the local “tasty.”
2. Fans of thick sliced bread will have to forgo their preference when making ham and cheese decker sandwiches. Remember: the heftier the bread, the more challenging it gets to achieve a gooey melt. You also risk overcooking your toast!
3. Don't skimp on the butter. Ensure a golden-brown finish with generously coated slices of bread.
4. A nice layer of mayo does the trick if you're out of butter. You won't even notice the difference!
5. Use a cast-iron skillet or griddle if you have one. The heavy-bottomed pan allows for better heat distribution, resulting in an even brown and perfect melt.

An Easy Three-Ingredient Tomato Soup

Round out your kid’s meal by pairing the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a creamy tomato soup. This way, your kiddo also benefits from vitamins C and E and lycopene. Are you worried about the extra time that making this soup might require? Try this version that gets the job done in under half an hour. You can also prepare a batch in advance, keep it in the freezer, and just reheat it in the morning.

Ingredients:

• 1 (400-g) can crushed tomatoes
• 240 ml water or stock (vegetable, chicken, or beef)
• milk or cream (optional)
• salt and pepper, to taste
• oregano powder (optional)

Method:

1. Combine crushed tomatoes and water or stock in a pot.
2. Simmer mixture over medium heat for 15-20 minutes.
3. Stir in milk or cream for a thicker consistency.
4. Season with salt, pepper, and oregano powder. Serve hot or cold with ham and cheese sandwiches.

Top tips to thicken tomato soup

The quickest way to thicken tomato soup is to simmer it until the liquid reduces. But if you want it chunkier or heftier (perfect for dunking sandwiches!), these are your options:

• Add 1-2 teaspoons cornstarch diluted in a teaspoon of water. Stir the mixture into the soup and simmer on low until thick.
• Toss in cubed potatoes into the pot for a chunkier consistency. The root crop contains starches that can thicken any dish!
• Freeze the prepared tomato soup for up to 4 months. Thaw the mixture completely before reheating and adding cream.

Ham and cheese sandwiches are a fuss-free baon option your child will love. If your chikiting still needs extra encouragement, pack the bread with fries and a three-cheese dip. Expect an empty baonan at the end of the day! And once you give this recipe a shot, there will be repeats. Try it today!
